What’s in a Defense?

So what does it take to build a Retro Bowl defense that is going to help you win it all? Well it begins by understanding what positions are available to you in the game. We can break it down by the following”

DL = Defensive Lineman

LB = Linebacker

DB = Defensive Back

Unfortunately, you as the player have ZERO control on the defense in terms of player control. Thus you must build your defense accordingly. Now, before you start throwing a huge run defense thinking that is going to work, you must understand that Retro Bowl runs off of RNG (Random Number Generator). This means on any given play, the game will “roll the dice” on one of your defensive players to see how the play will play out. Now, how you specifically build your defense can depend on the type of league play you are doing.

Before we break down different types of defenses, you will see discussions around a format call 0-0-0. This breaks down to DL-LB-DB, with each number correlating to the number of that position on the roster. Some may be more difficult than others as you have a roster salary limit! Now for the break down!

1. 0-3-4, 0-2-4 – Maximizes your defense’s turnover rate.

2. 0-3-3, 0-3-2 – Elite defense; maximizes tackles and fumbles. Lots of forced punts and FGs.

3. 0-2-3, 0-1-4 – A hair under the tier above; not as effective though due to the holes in defense.

4. 0-0-4 – The best defense across all difficulties besides Extreme; maximizes interception rate.

5. 0-2-2 – The base of what makes a good defense.

6. 0-1-3, 0-3-1 – Outside of the base that makes a good defense; can be a little inconsistent.

7. 0-0-3, 0-3-0, 0-1-2, 0-2-1 – Barely a 5-star defense if all players are maxed out; also inconsistent.

8. 0-0-2, 0-2-0, 0-1-1 – Mediocre.

9. 0-0-1, 0-1-0 – Useless.

10. 0-0-0 – Are you even trying to stop the other team?

Building the defense can mean the difference between succeeding in league play (or if you are having fun) and sitting on that proverbial coach each season. Do you have suggestions on a new Defensive meta?
